What to Wear for Your Engagement Shoot: Tips from Elizabeth Jackson Photography

As a wedding photographer one of the most common questions I get asked is what we should wear to our engagement session. Now there is no right answer to this question, here are 5 tips I have found to be very helpful throughout the years. 

1. Coordinate, But not matchy match!

While it’s great for couples to coordinate their outfits, you don’t have to match exactly. Instead, aim for complementary colors and styles that reflect your personalities. For instance, if one person is wearing a soft, neutral tone, the other might choose a color that compliments but doesn’t duplicate. This creates a harmonious look without being too uniform.

2. Be comfortable

Comfort is key! Your engagement shoot should be a fun and relaxed experience, so wear outfits that you feel comfortable and confident in. Choose clothes that fit well and flatter your body shape. Avoid overly tight or loose clothing, as it can affect how natural and relaxed you appear in photos. A big tip is to wear the outfits around the house and take pictures from all angles and see if you love how the outfit looks in all angles.

3. Consider the Location and Season

Think about your shoot’s location and the season when planning your outfits. For an outdoor session in the fall, rich, warm tones can look stunning against a backdrop of colorful leaves. For a beach shoot, light, airy fabrics and pastel colors might be a perfect fit. Matching your attire to the setting will enhance the overall aesthetic of your photos.

 4.  Add your personality

Incorporate elements that reflect your style as a couple. Whether it’s a favorite accessory, a meaningful piece of jewelry, or a coordinated theme, adding personal touches can make your photos feel more authentic and special.

5. Avoid Busy Patterns

While a pop of pattern can add interest, avoid overly busy or distracting prints. Solid colors or subtle patterns usually work best and keep the focus on you and your partner rather than on your clothing. Avoid big brand logos and graphic shirts, these are distracting and take away from looking at your and your partner.
